This is just off the path of where we were walking. I thought a portrait shot of this would show off how tall and majestic those trees were. I wish I had a wider angle lense to really show off how fantastic this place was.

Really amazing capture there mate. Great composition and deep depth of field. Maybe crop the right side a little the path seems to sneak into the image.

@Darren: Yeah I was trying so hard to focus the path out of the frame but I guess it snuck in there in the end. There's a bloody sign just to the left of frame which I was trying to get out as well. I guess cropping it is the best idea!!
Lovely...Great composition... where is this place?
5 Dec 2006 1:13am
@Amit: This place is called Kuroyama Santaki which roughly translates to black mountain 3 waterfalls. Which is pretty true if you stay tuned to my next photos you'll see why this is true. Oh yeah it's in Saitama in Japan just north of Tokyo. Hope it helps you out!! Thanks for your visit.
This is a great shot. I love how the light is coming through the forest canopy. I t would be interesting to play around with this in B & W and see what kinds fo tones you could pull out. I would guess that there would be some interesting tones in the water in the middle ground that might help emphasize the flow of water through this intimate landscape.

@Aidan: Hey I never thought about making this b&w, we'll do mate I'll give it a go some time tomorrow. I probably won't post it but I'll write my result on your page. Thanks for the visit mate!! Come again.
Beautiful picture.

@badala: Thanks mate!!
This is the kind of forest where you wouldnt be surprised if some elves from Lord of the Rings was jumping out from the bushes. Well maybe a little surprised...
5 Dec 2006 4:08am
@Gnarf: Yeah I know what you mean...there were some elf looking fellows working in the shops at the top of this little mountain though. I don't know if they had any rings of destruction but their feet were hairy. I was suprised...I wanted a photo but they wouldn't let me.
Purely magical! I can hear the water flow...

@Manuela Photography: Haha thanks mate!!
Hi mate. Just been checking your posts of the past week and esp like the forest shots. The slow shutter works a treat on the stream thats tucked away at the bottom of the picture. It's a nice surprize to find as you scroll down the page. Your night-shots inspired me to try it myself but the results have been....well...."disappointing" to say the least. I think I'll have to invest in a tripod at some point. Anyway its been good catching up with your posts mate.
5 Dec 2006 4:28am
@Stu: Hey!!! Welcome back!! I hope you're not sick from being in...Bali was it?? Anyway I recommend buying a tripod mate. 3500 yen and you'll be set up. Just make sure you buy a pretty tall one that's foldable because taking photos on your knees becasue the tripod is too small is no fun....ruins the jeans too!! I've got a cheapo Velbon cx444...it hasn't got any balances but it does a great job and it's tall too. Thanks for your visit mate and good luck with those night shots!! Can't wait to see em.
lovely!! great capture...

@Prashanth: Thank you very much!!
Wow! I´d like this was my office! You choose a good vel. make it this shotl, the efect in the water falls is so pacefull!
5 Dec 2006 7:59am
@emarquetti: Wow thank you very much for your compliment. I wish this was my office too...but maybe it's a little cold in winter haha. Come again anytime!!
Really nice shot! I wouldn't change a thing!
5 Dec 2006 8:19am
@Craiger: Thanks mate!! I might crop that path out of it but I'll try not to change too much.
That is quite nice. the combination of the creek and trees is quite nice.
5 Dec 2006 8:39am
@revil: Thanks Pat!! I'm glad you like it. Thanks for taking my shift today!!
Splendid shot - very well done! I often find forest shots to be boring because everything is close to the same color but you've got so many different tones and the light through the trees makes this one pop. I agree with Stu about the slow exposure - like a little treat at the end while scrolling down.
5 Dec 2006 9:26am
@Jason Kravitz: Thank you very much...that's such a nice compliment. Especially because you're not usually fond of forest shots. I wasn't sure about posting this actually because it's a little boring ie. no people or no pretty colours but you're right with the tones. I like how this picture kind of jumps out at you. Thanks for your visit mate!! come again.
great composition mate. I didint notice the path till Darren pointed it out (grrrrrrr Darren!), but to be honest It doesnt bother me. The slow exposure is a cracker and those greens are to die for. The portrait style was a fine choice as it most effectively frames the stream. Looks like a wonderful hike!
5 Dec 2006 10:48am
@Duncan Galbraith: Yeah mate...it's only a little hike but it's a slow one if you're taking pictures. There were so many places to take photos!!! I may or may not crop that little bit of path out of the picture but I think I'll just leave it in there. I don't think it's too much of a bother. Thanks for your visit mate!! Your photo was a cracker too!!
So lush. This should be in a book or a calendar. Your compositions are knocking me over lately. Keep up the good work, mate!
5 Dec 2006 11:08am
@Damon Schreiber: Thanks mate!! That's a real compliment coming from you. You've got some brilliant pics as well I visit your site religiously!! Thanks for the visit!!
A perfect shot! Sell it to your country's tourism dept.
5 Dec 2006 12:08pm
@Shuva: Haha I don't know if they'd buy it mate!!! I'm sooo just an amatuer!! I'd love to send it through though just to see what happens. Thanks for your visit.
Amazing capture, it looks like a wallpaper or whatever. It seems to be a really nice place.
5 Dec 2006 12:36pm
@Tim: Yeah it was a spectacular place...I'd recommend it to anybody who has half a day to spare. Thank you very much for your comment.
Amazing! I love the different colors! Maybe you could have tried on polarizing filter to make the colors stand out even more.
5 Dec 2006 12:42pm
@Ryan Yam: Yeah actually I went shopping for a polarizing filter but it costs an arm and a leg so I decided otherwise. but I will pick one up in Oz maybe because of all the beach shots I'll be taking while I'm there.
Nice shot! Excellent technical selections. At 17mm, I'm pretty sure you are at the very limit of the Kiss mechanical focal abilities. If you bring the rear of the lens any closer to the focal plane, the mirror will strike it when it moves from the front of the shutter. (Expensive lesson; long story; trust me on this one.) I was very happy to see that 6 second exposure. If you don't have a neutral density (ND) filter or two kicking around your bag, you should pick one up. This will allow an even longer exposure, allowing the camera to capture more information, eliminating the little tiny bit of wash in the upper portion of the image. You've made me come a long way to find any fault at all. Nicely done, and certainly worthy of a print.
5 Dec 2006 1:45pm
@Matt Trujillo Photography: Really!! I can't go any lower than 17mm??? That's a shame because I was saving up for a 10mm-12mm Sigma lense in the future. I didn't know that the mirror would hit the lense. Bugger that sux. Oh well I guess I'll have to stick with the 17mm. ND filter huh?? I'll definitely look into that. Thank you X 10 for all your helpful advice recently no only with me but with other people. I've read it and it's all in the head for future shots!! Come again mate!!
stunning! Is it really better than it looks here?
5 Dec 2006 2:04pm
@photogenic: Yeah mate!! It's sooooo much better! I can't tell you how wonderful this place is. Photographers dream I reckon.
Beautiful capture with a great perspective to it.
5 Dec 2006 2:18pm
@Aurélie: Thank you very much...you know I knew a girl with almost exactly the same name as you her name was Aurelia but we just used to call her PK because her first name was just too difficult to pronounce. Thanks for your visit Come again.
Stunning shot. This is what I see when I walk through forests but can never capture properly on my camera. Well done.
5 Dec 2006 3:00pm
@Aaron Schmidt: Thank you very much!! I loved your photo of the NZ shore too mate!! stunning!
Wonderful forest! Your shot is spendid. When I look at him, I am in the forest!
5 Dec 2006 4:33pm
@Still: I'm glad you think like that. Believe me the real thing is soooo much better!! Thank you very much for your visit.
I think the best word is 'incredible', you've captured the nature of the forest so well. Great use of 6 second exposure too.
5 Dec 2006 4:54pm
@Chris Sullivan: Thanks mate!! Yeah I had to really close my apature on this one to even get 6 seconds. It was a really bright day that day. Thanks for your visit mate...you're always welcome!!
I'm just going to say one thing about this shot, beautiful.
5 Dec 2006 4:55pm
@Angry Buddha: Mate you too!! I love the centered picture of the bridge you took. Lovely!! Thanks for coming and all your recent comments.
I wasn't aware of the newest Sigma, and stand corrected. I look forward to what you do with it.
5 Dec 2006 7:45pm
@Matt Trujillo Photography: It's cool mate!! I've really got my eye on this lense

Check it out if you want.
An absolutely fantastic shot. The small aperture and low iso really give this image much clarity and saturation. Wonderful composition as well. I would love to go to a place like this.
5 Dec 2006 8:35pm
@Kelvin Chan: Thank you very much I recommend this place for a day trip. It's got fantastic colours. I can't wait to go there next spring to check it out again.
this is like looking at a painting. I love it. You have such steady hands. Look at the way the water flowed!
Do you know that you this photograph was featured in yesterday's (December 5) Aminus3 Spotlight - http://www.aminus3.com/? Congrats!
